The Yale Program for Recovery and Community Health (PRCH) does collaborative research, training, and policy development around behavioral health, aiming to support the recovery and social inclusion of affected individuals, families, and communities. This position will be under Dr. Harper, who conducts qualitative and mixed methods research, informed by transformative and CBPR approaches, exploring intersections between poverty, finances and mental health as it pertains to marginalized populations including people with serious mental illness, who are unhoused, who use drugs, and people with histories of incarceration.
The Post Doctoral Associate will support Dr. Harper’s projects, including i) the NIH funded “Examining Non-Congregate Shelter Effects on Mental Health Crises through Community Health Partnerships in Connecticut” (ENCAMP-CT) project in partnership with the Yale Department of Emergency Medicine, that uses mixed methods to evaluate impacts of non-congregate housing on mental health outcomes for people experiencing homelessness and ii) the NIH and DMHAS funded Connecticut Mental Health Center Financial Health project, that aims to understand financial management support needs of people with serious mental illness, who are unhoused, who use drugs, and/or histories of incarceration. This includes exploring financial service/fintech-based solutions to enable supported financial decision making. Other projects may be added to the portfolio in the future.
Key responsibilities:
- Support with project coordination including overseeing research design, data collection and analysis, leading meetings and presentations, liaising with research and community partners, and supervising interns, post-graduate fellows and research assistants.
- Conduct literature reviews, particularly related to finances and mental illness, developing systems to stay abreast of current research in the area to ensure that this is integrated into ongoing and new projects; may include conducting/publishing scoping reviews.
- Oversee communications, including community outreach, advertising, dissemination of materials (reports and briefs), and website and social media updates; this may include op-eds and blog posts.
- Support or lead in writing grants for next step research projects.
- Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and present research findings at conferences.
Education/Experience
- PhD in a relevant field or discipline such as Psychology, Sociology, Public Health, or Anthropology, with experience in community based or mixed methods research examining health disparities and the structural conditions that intersect with mental health or related topics.
- Experience and interest in studying economic conditions and financial systems, and the related experiences of marginalized communities.
- Experience with qualitative data collection and analysis is essential, including use of and managing teams using NVivo or other qualitative software packages.
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, to communicate research results to both expert and non-expert audiences. Fluency in Spanish would be an advantage.
The Post Doctoral Associate position is a full-time appointment for one year, with full benefits and the possibility of renewal for a second year, dependent upon performance and funding availability. Annual salary is $68,500. Much of the work will be remoate though will involve in-person data collection and periodic in-person meetings.
