What Is a Postgrad?

A postgraduate appointee is an individual who has earned a bachelor’s or master’s degree (or its equivalent) and is engaged in a temporary period of academic or research training under the mentorship of a Yale Ladder Rank Faculty member.

This training is designed to:

  • Provide structured academic or research experience
  • Support the development of specialized skills and knowledge
  • Prepare individuals for future academic, research, or professional opportunities

Postgraduate appointments at Yale are typically:

  • One year in duration, with the possibility of a one-year extension
  • Guided by clearly defined educational and training objectives
  • Supervised by a designated Ladder Rank Faculty mentor
