Position Overview

Under the supervision of the PI, Dr. Ehimen Aneni (Cardiology), providing a high degree of independence and limited supervision, the postgraduate associate will have a unique and exciting opportunity to participate in cutting edge cardiovascular disease imaging-based research at the intersection of sleep disordered breathing and heart disease. The projects seek to understand the mechanisms behind the development of cardiomyopathies in persons with obstructive sleep apnea. The study will provide a unique opportunity to interact with study participants as well as other health care workers including sleep technicians, imaging technicians, cardiologists and sleep medicine specialists.

The successful candidate will work closely with the PI, Dr Aneni, to recruit and retain patients into a prospective cardiac imaging-based study. They will also work on reprocessing cardiac imaging data using cutting-edge research software, creation and management of multiple databases, including a large retrospective database, data analysis, research presentations, and drafting of research manuscripts.

This is a paid, full-time position with great benefits, having a 1-year fixed duration with a maximum possible 12-month extension. This role will offer the unique opportunity to develop clinical research skills using novel cardiac imaging tools while gaining patient interaction experience in the healthcare setting.

This is a full-time, in-person, paid position with insurance benefits.

Training:

The associate will learn how to perform statistical analysis in Stata software and data cleaning/organization of electronic health record datasets. She/he will train to be a research team member, participate in team meetings, learn about sleep disorders and cardiovascular disease, and analyze complex data.

The postgraduate associate will also attend study visits which are conducted in the cardiac imaging laboratories, and will gain experience in how these studies are conducted. She/he will have the opportunity to participate in manuscript publications, research team group meetings, and will gain experience presenting and organizing research infrastructure programs and research presentations.

She/he will attend Dr. Aneni’s collaborative research meetings, sleep medicine clinical and research meetings, seminars organized by the Yale Translational Research Imaging Center (headed by Dr. Albert Sinusas), nuclear cardiology journal clubs and cardiovascular medicine grand rounds.

The associate will participate in grant writing and will receive training on various aspects of grantsmanship.

Mentorship:

This individual will meet bi-weekly with Dr. Aneni (aside from weekly lab/update meetings), the study PI, who will also provide guided learning through the review of the medical literature as it pertains to sleep disorders and heart disease. Dr Aneni will provide primary mentorship to the successful candidate. Secondary mentorship will be provided by Dr. Yaggi, and there will be an opportunity to meet with other cardiologists, sleep medicine specialists, and research scientists, depending on the candidate’s interests.

Education:

Postgraduate positions are open to those who have received a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in a related field. The ideal candidate will be one who is enthusiastic about heart disease and has excellent people and organizational skills. Prior experience in clinical research is desirable, but not required. The position is for one year, with possible extension for a second year. This is an ideal position for an enthusiastic, motivated, and reliable candidate with an interest in a career in clinical research or medicine.
