MIT Teaching & Learning Laboratory

Applications are invited for the position of Associate Director for Assessment and
Evaluation, Teaching and Learning Laboratory, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The Teaching and Learning Laboratory (TLL) is part of the Office of the Dean for
Undergraduate Education. Its goals are to promote excellence in teaching and learning
throughout the Institute, serve as a resource for educational innovation, and further an
understanding of learning in university-level science and engineering. MIT has been a
leader in the development of educational innovation, and the Associate Director for
Assessment and Evaluation will collaborate with MIT faculty, administration, and students
to assess new and ongoing educational initiatives throughout the Institute.
 
Responsibilities
 
The Associate Director for Assessment and Evaluation will be responsible for the design and
implementation of assessment studies examining a wide range of new and ongoing
educational initiatives. In this work, he/she will consult with the Director of TLL and other
TLL staff members. Educational innovations at MIT focus on how pedagogy, curricula, and
educational technology, including the use of online learning, contribute to student learning
and satisfaction, and the Associate Director will further an understanding of the
effectiveness of these efforts. In most cases, the Associate Director will be responsible for
designing a study, getting IRB approval, collecting data, undertaking analysis, and reporting
on findings. The authoring of articles or papers for scholarly publication may also be possible. In
some cases, the Associate Director will be asked to advise faculty, administrators, and/or
students on designing and implementing their own assessment studies. He/she will lead
workshops on assessment and contribute to electronic and print materials to educate other
members of the MIT community on assessment and evaluation.
 
Qualifications
 
Ph.D. in an appropriate field such as assessment and program evaluation, educational
measurement, engineering education, science education, educational research or
psychology, with a preference for a background (e.g., undergraduate degree) in science or
engineering; at least five years of experience in the field of assessment in academia or an
equivalent organizational setting; expertise in both quantitative and qualitative
methodologies, including the use of statistical package(s) for quantitative analysis;
knowledge of learning analytics preferred; demonstrated knowledge of the issues, best
practices, current research, and innovations in higher education, including the particular
challenges of teaching and learning in science and engineering; ability to work
collaboratively; excellent writing and presentation skills; talent for listening carefully and
communicating tactfully; ability to work in a high-pressure environment with a minimum of
supervision.
 
This is a temporary two-year position with a salary range of $80,000-$100,000

The University of Michigan is seeking a full-time Research Program Officer to assist in design, implement, and assess a project to provide authentic research experiments in introductory laboratory courses in Biology and Chemistry, with the goal of increasing student retention in STEM majors. The ideal candidate has both disciplinary expertise in biology or chemistry and experience with instructional design, educational assessment and project management. This position is funded by an HHMI grant that will run for at least 60 months and could begin as early as December 2014.

Responsibilities include coordinating a curriculum development project across three departments (Chemistry; Ecology and Evolutionary Biology; Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology), working with faculty to implement components of their ongoing research in a classroom setting that simultaneously enhances their research program; and working with project team to assess the effectiveness of incorporating authentic research on retention of students in STEM majors and other student metrics.

A Ph.D in Biology or Chemistry with experience in science education and assessment is required. Experience in curriculum development, instructional design and/or research a plus.
