Overview of the Position:
We are looking to hire a postgrad for a one-year position in the Peter Raymond laboratory within the Yale School of the Environment. The postgrad will be tasked with collecting and harmonizing spatial datasets for the United States on nutrient runoff, climate change, diet, fertilizer usage, and sewage treatment, among others, to understand how such compounding global change parameters might influence water quality in the future. Postgraduate appointments are one-year appointments with the possibility of a one-year renewal. Salary for this position starts at $44,400 per year. Education: This position will benefit postgrads looking to apply to graduate school, particularly those interested in research programs, such as a PhD. The position will also likely benefit those interested in industry in either tech or the environmental sciences.
 
Training: Postgrads will gain skills in programming, scientific literature surveys, spatial data analysis, and ecological data science. They will also become well versed in concepts involving hydrology, biogeochemistry, climate change, and food system dynamics related to diet, waste, and fertilizer use.
 
Mentoring: Peter Raymond will be the primary mentor for this position. Maya Almaraz, a Research Scientist working under Pete, will also be available for additional mentorship and guidance on the project. Postgrads will be part of a relatively large lab at Yale University, which provides opportunities for peer-to-peer learning.

Qualifications: B.A. or B.S. required. Qualified candidate should be familiar with spatial data techniques (e.g., rasters, GIS, etc.) and have some basic understanding of ecosystem dynamics, such as hydrology or biogeochemistry.

Postgraduate Associate Position — Department of Pediatrics

The Yale Department of Pediatrics is seeking a postgraduate associate to pursue clinical research in sickle cell disease (SCD) and pain under the mentorship of Dr. Nitya Bakshi, Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the Pediatric SCD Program at Yale University. The research laboratory is focused on the study of chronic pain in SCD. The goal of the research laboratory is to improve outcomes and care for persons with SCD. The research program is focused on studying chronic pain phenotypes and their longitudinal outcomes in SCD using survey instruments, quantitative sensory testing approaches, and qualitative methods. The lab also has significant expertise in qualitative methods, and their application to study pain and decision making in SCD, particularly as it related to chronic SCD pain. The lab is now expanding its focus to refining a yoga intervention and studying the feasibility of yoga for chronic SCD pain and anticipates a future clinical trial.
 
The postgraduate associate will facilitate screening and recruitment in SCD clinics and follow-up for participants and receive hands-on clinical research experience in a mentored environment. The postgraduate associate will collect and manage data from research participants and learn skills in data management in RedCAP and OnCore. The postgraduate associate will present their progress in weekly meetings. The postgraduate associate will have the opportunity to engage with sickle cell communities in New Haven and nationally, and will also collaborate with external collaborators of the Bakshi lab.
 
Education: The postgraduate will be immersed in a clinical and clinical research environment. This position will enhance the postgraduate associate’s education and skillset in SCD observational and clinical trials design and data analyses and qualitative research methods in SCD. The postgraduate associate will have an opportunity for authorship and co-authorship of manuscripts and assist with grant writing, with direct mentorship from Dr. Bakshi, and based on their individual career goals.  This position will thus prepare the candidate for an advanced degree program, for e.g., a PhD or MD program.
 
Training: The postgraduate associate will learn skills in research study design and study implementation and will receive hands on clinical research experience. The postgraduate associate will also have access to education/trainings in clinical research at the Yale Center for Clinical Investigation (YCCI), and also receive education/training in the responsible conduct of research.
 
Mentoring: The postgraduate associate will be under the mentorship and supervision of Dr. Bakshi and will have the opportunity to collaborate with several national leaders in SCD at Yale University, and elsewhere. The postgraduate associate will attend 1–2X weekly meetings with Dr. Bakshi. They will work alongside other student trainees in the lab. The postgraduate associate will be expected to develop an individual career development plan. The postgraduate associate’s career development will also be supported to attend national conferences and present abstracts/posters, and to contribute to publications from the lab.
 
The training position is located at Yale University Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology. The position is for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year.

Postgraduate Research Position — Department of Psychiatry (Seo Lab)

A postgraduate research position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Hyojung Seo in the Department of Psychiatry (https://seolab.yale.edu/). The research focus of the laboratory is to understand how the brain regulates cognition and motivation via large-scale neural networks connecting prefrontal cortex and subcortical regions in non-human primates. We combine electrophysiology, chemogenetic circuit manipulation and computational modeling to analyze neural network dynamics that give rise to complex behavior. In collaboration with Dr. Yong-Hui Jiang in the Department of Genetics, we also test therapeutic gene editing in non-human primates.
 
Mentoring
The candidate will receive mentoring from the members and the collaborators of the lab. The candidate will meet with the PI regularly to discuss his/her progress and productivity. The candidate will participate and present at weekly journal clubs and have opportunity to learn about topics/issues in cognitive neuroscience as well as state-of-the-art methods of network analyses.
 
Training
The candidate will work closely with graduate students and receive basic training to rigorously use experimental methods such as electrophysiology and chemogenetics, and to analyze high-dimensional neural data. The candidate will receive training for surgical skills for delivery of genetic tools (e.g., DREADD, CRISPR) into the brain. Under the guidance of supervisor (PI), the candidate will learn how to apply mathematical methods/models in an interpretable and biologically-relevant way.
 
Education/Experience
Candidates should have a B.A./B.S. in biological science/neuroscience/biomedical engineering or related fields. Prior lab experience is preferred but not required. Candidates with research experience in machine learning and artificial neural networks, are strongly encouraged to apply.
 
The candidate will participate in lab meetings/weekly journal clubs and have the opportunity to learn/discuss the topics/theories and state-of-the-art methodologies of cognitive and systems neuroscience, preparing them for their future educational goals such as applying for graduate or medical schools.
 
Additional Information
The Postgraduate Associate position is one year in duration with a salary of $3700/month. Postgraduate positions are open to those who have recently received a bachelor and/or master’s degree, but not doctoral degrees.

Introduction of School/Department:
The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Yale has two related goals: first, the use of the tools and methods of engineering to better understand human physiology and disease; second, the development of new technologies for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of human disease.
 
The interdisciplinary and highly collaborative environment of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Yale, as well as the strong and rapidly growing biomedical imaging community, will provide an exceptional environment for the postgraduate trainee. Moreover, since research in the Rodríguez Lab lies at the interface between cutting-edge optical microscopy and neurobiology, the holder of this position will benefit immensely from the strong neuroscience community at Yale—including the recently established Wu Tsai Institute.
 
The Rodríguez Lab focuses on developing optical microscopy tools for visualizing critical biological processes deep within their native context, with a particular focus on applications in neuroscience. To do this, we use a multidisciplinary approach involving physics, nonlinear optics, and microscopy development. In particular, and relevant to this position, we are interested in demonstrating the power of our imaging techniques for deep-tissue imaging of the mouse spinal cord.
 
Overview of the Position:
Education: This will be an immersive training experience, where trainees will undertake projects to experience research at the level of graduate school students, with the direct oversight and mentorship of a graduate student and postdoc. This position offers a unique opportunity to perform research at the intersection of engineering and neuroscience.
 
Training:  The Rodríguez Lab is committed to mentoring and training the next generation of scientists and scholars. The successful candidate will gain experience in neuroscience research using the mouse spinal cord as a model system, learning techniques such as mouse colony maintenance, perfusions, genotyping, immunohistochemistry, surgeries, imaging, and data analysis. In addition to experimental work, the candidate will contribute to smooth lab operations by placing orders, managing supplies, organizing protocols and data, coordinating equipment use, and supporting other day-to-day management tasks. This position offers a balanced combination of hands-on research and essential lab management experience.
 
Mentoring: The postgrad will be mentored by lab PI Dr. Cristina Rodríguez in conjunction with an assigned graduate student in the lab. The postgrad will meet every week with the PI Dr. Cristina Rodríguez, will present their work during weekly lab meetings, and have the opportunity to attend conferences and seminars.

Overview of the Position
The Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage (IPCH) and the Yale Peabody Museum (YPM) are seeking a postgraduate associate for a one-year, full-time position to contribute to a collaborative project to study the risks associated with hazardous materials in the museum’s collections. This project is part of a longer-term initiative to enhance collections care and promote safe access for staff, researchers, and the communities interacting with these collections.
 
Historically, both organic and inorganic pesticides have been utilized in museum collections, particularly those comprising organic materials such as textiles, wood, plant fibers, skin, and natural history specimens, to safeguard against pests. Furthermore, some objects were made from materials now recognized as posing health risks. Though protocols exist to minimize occupational exposure to these materials, accessible information remains limited, especially regarding potential dangers to non-museum staff or the broader public.
 
This position offers an opportunity to gain practical training in heritage science, preventive conservation, and environmental health and safety practices within a museum context. The postgraduate associate will gain experience working with collections, instrumentation, and interdisciplinary teams.
 
Working under the supervision of IPCH and YPM staff, the postgraduate associate will:
Review historical and current literature on the use of pesticides in museum collections and methods for their detection. Begin identifying which YPM collections may have higher levels of hazardous material exposure by analyzing collection records and treatment histories, and through consultations with museum staff.
Learn how X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy can help identify elements associated with inorganic pesticides and distinguish them from object components or surface treatments containing the same elements. 
Assist in developing and refining protocols for using handheld XRF instruments to screen objects, storage furniture, and housing materials. Conduct XRF measurements on objects and housing materials. Curate and analyze the resulting data.
In consultation with Yale’s Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) department, explore complementary surface testing methods (e.g., direct measurement and wipe sampling) and airborne exposure assessment. Gain familiarity with industrial hygiene considerations, including potential exposure routes (dermal, inhalation), transfer pathways (e.g., to gloves or hands), appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and disposal of contaminated housing materials and PPE.
In consultation with YPM and EHS staff, develop communication tools and safe handling guidelines that identify hazards and outline suitable mitigation measures for different user groups.
 
Education
The project complements degree programs in chemistry, environmental sciences, cultural heritage and natural history conservation, industrial hygiene and occupational health, and related fields by offering practical, interdisciplinary research experience for recent graduates with a bachelor’s or master’s degree. This will prepare the postgraduate associate for further education in the above fields.
 
Training
The postgraduate associate will receive hands-on training in safe collection handling practices, XRF spectroscopy for detecting elements associated with hazardous materials, surface sampling, data management, and analysis. Online short courses, including laboratory safety and X-ray safety training, must be completed to comply with environmental health and safety requirements. Through their work with Yale EHS, they will learn about risk assessment and industrial hygiene practices.
 
Mentoring
The associate will be mentored by staff at IPCH and YPM through regular check-ins, collaborative project work, and opportunities to attend lab meetings and seminars. They will work closely with a natural history conservator, conservation scientists, museum professionals, and Environmental Health and Safety colleagues. They will also join the cohort of emerging conservation professionals at Yale and participate in events organized by the Committee for Educational Opportunities in Conservation.
 
Appointment information
Anticipated appointment dates: September 1st, 2025 – August 31st, 2026
The postgraduate associate position is a full-time, 12-month position.
Salary will be commensurate with skills and experience, in the range of $45,000-$55,000. Allowable relocation costs up to $2500 will be reimbursed. Required qualifications
A bachelor’s, master’s, or equivalent degree from a recognized institution of higher learning, with at most two years of relevant prior post-degree research experience.
Competency using Windows operating systems and spreadsheets. Ability to record, examine, analyze, and compile data.
Good attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational and time management skills.
Solid verbal and written communication skills.
 
Desired/preferred qualifications and skills
A bachelor’s or master’s degree in physical sciences or engineering (chemistry, environmental science, geology), cultural heritage or natural history conservation, industrial hygiene, occupational health, or related fields.
Experience or familiarity with operating a handheld XRF instrument, including safe data collection, X-ray safety protocols, and data interpretation. Experience or familiarity with other analytical techniques, such as FTIR, Raman, and SEM-EDS, is preferred but not required.
Experience working with delicate objects and/or specimens, ideally in a museum, gallery, library, or other cultural context.

The Testani Lab is a dynamic translational research group focused on advancing cardiovascular science through innovative experimental approaches and technologies. Overview of Position:

The Department of Internal Medicine (Section of Cardiology) has openings for full-time Postgraduate Research Associates. This position includes include both wet laboratory work and large animal experiments. This is a full-time, paid position with insurance benefits and is available for start in August 2025. 
The ideal candidates should have the ability to follow oral directions, interpret written protocols precisely, effectively manage time and meet deadlines, and be reliable and accountable. Skills in basic computer applications such as Microsoft Office and Excel are required.

Education:

Our research team is composed of a great group of, research associates, nurses, research scientist, statistician under Principal Investigator Jeffrey Testani, MD, MTR. Introduction: The Department of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science at Yale is a leader in developing and applying computational tools to transform our understanding of human health. This specific project focuses on developing and validating a transformer-based generative model of electronic health record data leveraging newly developed techniques for mixed categorical and numeric variables. Overview of the Position:

The Yale Center for British Art (YCBA) and the Yale Peabody Museum (YPM) invite applicants for a Postgraduate Associate position in the field of museum education. This is a one-year position with the possibility of renewal for one additional year; it is intended for individuals interested in exploring a career in this field. It is designed to offer opportunities for growth in content knowledge, object-based teaching strategies, and collaborative engagement with communities. After completion of the program, the Postgraduate Associate will be well-positioned to further their work in museum education. This position will expose the Postgraduate Associate to a broad range of museum education practices, including but not limited to programs for K–12 schools, undergraduate college and university students, after-school and youth groups, neurodiverse children and adults, and the public. Education/Training:

The Postgraduate Associate will have the opportunity to work with all members of the Education Department at the YCBA as well as other museum staff to create object-based initiatives and programs for schools and members of the greater New Haven community. The Postgraduate Associate will gain hands-on experience building both in-gallery and classroom curricula, researching objects in the collection, developing tours for school-age children and adults, and participating in the many public programs the YCBA offers. The YCBA will serve as the Postgraduate Associate’s first host site during the 2025–2026 academic year and as a central hub of joint projects and activities throughout the one-year term. At the Yale Peabody Museum, the Postgraduate Associate will have the opportunity to join projects and initiatives across all areas of YPM education and outreach beginning in the second half of the one-year appointment. Mentoring:

The appointee will receive training on modes of pedagogy and community engagement relevant to the current museum education field. These modes include engaging museum visitors and program participants in hands-on artmaking and material exploration; teaching through object-based, dialogical inquiry in museum galleries and classrooms; and scaffolding learning through sequential lesson planning. The appointee will receive mentorship primarily from the Educator for K-8, Family, and Access Programs at the YCBA and the Assistant Director of Public Education and Outreach at the YPM. Other educators from both museums and at different stages of their careers will further contribute mentorship as pertains to their areas of expertise (high school, college, and adult programs, for example) and to provide the appointee with a broader view of the museum education field. The appointee will work closely with and remain under the supervision of each primary mentor during the appointee’s placement at each respective museum. Furthermore, the appointee and both mentors will meet jointly once per week for shared supervisory support and collaborative planning. After completing the full year of work experience, the appointee will be situated to excel in a master’s degree program or entry-level position in museum education.

Any current or former New Haven Promise scholar with a bachelor’s degree is eligible for the position regardless of undergraduate major, though preference may be given to graduates with majors in communications, education, or any of the fields related to the collections of either museums.

Overview of the position

We are seeking a motivated postgraduate research associate interested in joining the Berro Lab to gain experience in the fields of molecular mechanobiology, biophysics and bioengineering.  The Berro lab is interested in how forces are produced and sensed at the molecular scale in cells, and we employ molecular and cellular biology tools and methods in our experiments (i.e., cell cultures, microscopy, PCR, protein and cell engineering).

We recently developed novel mechano-sensors that are compact, tunable, and modular for in vivo force measurements with diverse readouts (luminescence, fluorescence and analytical biochemistry). In this project, the candidate will primarily work with extracellular matrix force sensors recently engineered in our lab to quantify forces exerted by cells, tissues and organoids on their environment, for discovery research (e.g., during cell attachment, cell motility, embryo development) and drug screening applications (e.g. to discover anti-metastatic drugs).

The candidate should have enthusiasm for science and for expanding their methodological repertoire. The candidate is expected to participate in our weekly lab meetings and provide progress updates.

Education: This position offers the postgraduate candidate an opportunity to acquire technical skills and knowledge that will benefit them in their future career plans including graduate or medical school or biotechnology industry. The candidate will learn a variety of wet-bench technical skills and gain valuable theoretical knowledge.

Training:  The candidate will be trained in techniques of molecular and cell biology, and they will participate in weekly lab meetings. The lab is affiliated to the Molecular Biophysics & Biology department, the Cell Biology department, and the Nanobiology Institute, which provide numerous opportunities for attending seminars by renowned speakers, and auditing classes to broaden the candidate’s knowledge and perspectives in biology.

Mentoring: In our laboratory, we promote a culture of inclusivity and mentoring for scientific growth for our trainees. The Cha Lab, led by Dr. Christine Cha and based at Yale School of Medicine, harnesses interdisciplinary research to improve assessment and prevention of youth suicide. With the goal of preventing suicide, alleviating internal distress, and fostering well-being of people with various backgrounds, Cha Lab members focus on connecting clinical psychological science with other disciplines in innovative, pragmatic, and impactful ways. Pilot data collection focused on youth suicide risk and prevention will harness varying methodologies ranging from ecological momentary assessment (EMA) and behavioral measures to neuroimaging and psychophysiology among suicidal youth and their parents/guardians.

Overview of the Position:

The Cha Lab is seeking a full-time postgraduate associate to help oversee lab operations and launch pilot data collection. Data collection will occur in clinical care settings and possibly remotely, and some weekend/evening availability is expected in order to accommodate participating families’ schedules.   • Education: Training of the postgraduate associate will pertain to suicide, which is a central and timely topic to the degree of the postgraduate associate.   • Training: This postgraduate associate position facilitates the generation of new knowledge pertaining to youth suicide assessment and prevention. The postgraduate associate will gain experience with multiple aspects of the research process ranging from assistance with grant submissions to preparation of IRB materials, recruitment, data collection, data cleaning/analysis, and manuscript preparation. They will also be trained to directly interact with patient and nonpatient populations experiencing behavioral and emotional challenges, and exposed to multiple methodological approaches that may include EMA, reaction-time tasks, psychophysiology, and neuroimaging.
  • Mentoring: The postgraduate associate will be mentored closely by the Principal Investigator and lab director, Dr. Christine Cha, a clinical psychologist with nearly 10 years of experience in academic faculty positions, 15+ years of experience delivering psychotherapies and providing acute crisis services, and nearly 20 years of conducting research on self-harm and suicidality across the lifespan. Beyond regular meetings pertaining to lab operations and research projects, Dr. Cha will meet weekly with the postgraduate associate for 1 hour to focus on their professional development (e.g., supervise postgrad associate-led independent research, provide resume / statement feedback, offer career guidance/support as needed).

The Aksoy Lab: 60 College St, LEPH 607 and adjacent rooms. Our lab works on the tsetse fly model system. Tsetse are the obligate vectors of pathogenic African trypanosomes, which cause the socioeconomically devastating diseases human and animal African trypanosomiases. Tsetse also house endosymbiotic bacteria that mediate numerous critical fly physiologies, including reproduction and vector competence. We employ state-of-the-art molecular and genetic technologies to study the interface between tsetse, African trypanosomes, and endosymbiotic bacteria, with ultimate goal being to develop novel strategies that can be applied to tsetse control and reducing tsetse-borne disease.

Overview of position:

  • Education: This position offers the opportunity to acquire technical skills and knowledge that will benefit individuals whose career plans include graduate or medical school or employment with a public health agency or in the biotechnology industry. Through employment in our immersive lab and departmental environments, the trainee will learn a variety of wet-bench technical skills and gain valuable theoretical experience to facilitate them becoming fruitful, independent scientists.

Our team consists of members of the Department of Patholoy and Medicine (Medical Oncology) at the Yale School of Medicine. We use innovative multidisciplinary approaches to identify biomarkers of treatment resistance, brain metastasis, and clinical outcome in patients with lung cancer.

Overview of the Position

The incidence of brain metastasis is rising across multiple types of cancer and this remains a significant barrier to improving the survival and quality of life of patients with advanced stage cancers. We are looking for motivated candidates who are interested in joining our team of translational cancer investigators to study this question.

  • Education: The position is ideal for recent graduates interested in strengthening their research experience and publication record prior to applying to medical and/or graduate school.

Yale Child Study Center (YCSC) research teams collaborate with youth, families, schools, and communities to improve their social, emotional, behavioral, and developmental health. The YCSC, which serves as the department of child psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine, is actively growing in many areas – from basic research in the genetic and neurobiological basis of childhood psychiatric disorders; to applied research co-constructing tools for youth, schools, and families to advance social, emotional, and academic outcomes; to evaluation of training for clinicians and other behavioral health professionals, as well as professional development for educators and school-based practitioners in evidence-based social and emotional instruction.
 
Overview of the Position:
 
The YCSC Affective Youth (YAY) Lab (https://medicine.yale.edu/childstudy/research/collaborative-labs/yay-lab/), led by Dr. Wan-Ling Tseng, is seeking to hire a Postgraduate Associate to work on research focused on understanding the neuropsychological mechanisms of irritability and related symptoms in childhood and adolescence. In our study, we are using fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) to identify patterns of brain activation and connectivity while youth are experiencing frustration. We hope to identify neural patterns that would predict changes in irritability over time and later outcomes. In addition, we are studying environmental factors (e.g., exposure to crime, pollutants and chemicals), cognitive function, and social functioning (with family and peers) and their influences on youth’s irritability and brain function over time. Our research is funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), YCSC, and Yale School of Medicine.
 

Training:

The Postgraduate Associate will receive training in research in the field of pediatric irritability, with an emphasis on identifying mechanisms and predictors of chronic irritability across multiple levels of analysis from neural circuits, physiology, behaviors, social experiences (e.g., peer interactions), to familial and environmental factors and across development. Specifically, the Postgraduate Associate will be involved in a NIMH-funded longitudinal imaging study in 180 youth (ages 8-13) with varying degrees of irritability. The training will include active participation in recruitment and assessment procedures; procedures for brain imaging using fMRI in pediatric populations; collection and processing of clinical, behavioral, physiological, and fMRI data; administration of structured interviews, IQ tests, smartphone-based ecological momentary assessments, and parent-child interaction tasks; data analytic methodology; leading and participating in journal discussions; and presentations of study results (e.g., posters or manuscripts for publications).

Mentorship:

The Postgraduate Associate will be mentored by Dr. Tseng through weekly one-on-one meetings and other frequent communications and interactions. They will also be mentored by other faculty, post-doctoral associates, and collaborators of Dr. Tseng. In addition, they will have opportunities to mentor undergraduate research assistants.

Education:

In addition to the training described above, the Postgraduate Associate will receive education on ethical and responsible conduct of research with human subjects including pediatric samples and clinical populations; research methods and statistics; processing and analysis of data (including fMRI and physiological data).

 
Primary responsibilities and opportunities of this Postgraduate Associate position include:
 
(1) recruiting and screening potential research participants;
 
(2) acquiring data from participating children (ages 8-13) and their caregivers using behavioral, cognitive, physiological, fMRI techniques and questionnaires;
 
(3) preparing and/or modifying Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols;
 
(4) oversight of research assistants (RAs);
 
(5) data management and quality control;
 
(6) opportunities to learn and be involved in data analysis;
 
(7) scientific poster and manuscript preparation and authorship; and
 
(8) general administrative duties to maintain the workings of the laboratory.
 
Qualifications:
 
We encourage applicants from diverse background to apply. Applicants with a B.A., B.S., or equivalent degree are preferred. Experience working with school-age children (not necessarily in the research setting) is preferred. Prior background in developmental/clinical psychology, neuroscience, or a related field is a plus. Experience with fMRI data acquisition and analysis is not necessary, but helpful.
 
The Postgraduate Associate must possess excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills. Hours will vary week-to-week and will sometimes include evenings and weekends. A two-year commitment is required, although appointment is one year only and renewable for one additional year.

Introduction of School/Department:

This is an exciting opportunity in a newly established lab in the Pathology department at Yale School of Medicine. In addition to life in the CMB lab, the position provides an immersive experience into the world of translational research and medicine. Postgrads will be encouraged to attend seminars, meetings, conferences and departmental gatherings. In addition, postgrads have access to the Yale Postgraduate Research Association (YPGA), where one can socialize, network and collaborate through the next phase of their professional life.

Overview of the Position:

Mission. The Mandel-Brehm is seeking to fill multiple positions for study of the root causes of autoimmune encephalitis (AE), a high risk, poorly understood class of human disorders of the central nervous system (CNS). Over the past few years, through use of newly developed molecular technologies, Caleigh and her collaborators have opened the field to understanding several forms of autoimmune diseases of the nervous system (https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=716716562084366), as well additional disorders that await our investigation. Beyond a better understanding of these specific diseases, our studies deepen fundamental knowledge of the intersection between the nervous and immune systems. For example, why certain regions of the CNS are preferentially vulnerable to attack by the immune system, are at the core of our research program. Additionally, we are exploring unexpected triggers of autoimmune neurological disorders, such as viral and bacterial infections. These approaches capitalize on the mentor’s formal training in neuroscience and established collaborations with clinicians and clinician-scientists.

Training: There are multiple ongoing and emerging translational research and basic research projects for interested individuals. All projects have in common the potential for discovery of disease mechanisms and development of therapeutics, through training in cutting edge approaches such as programmable phage display and mass spectrometry. Additional methods to be mastered include sample processing, western blotting, immunohistochemistry, tissue culture and microscopy. Additionally, those with bioinformatics or machine learning backgrounds have an additional opportunity to discover novel disease footprints in immune profiling datasets that remain largely unexplored.

Mentoring: Career development is a high priority for the PI. Beyond training in research, mentoring through scientific writing, review of scientific journal articles, and seminar presentations both at Yale and relevant scientific meetings, will provide visibility and preparation for a career in academia or industry. The lab has weekly lab meetings to receive feedback on project progress as well as weekly one-on-ones with Dr. Mandel-Brehm. 

Education: Seminars and informal literature readings will be tailored to individual goals. Candidates will be encouraged to audit Yale undergraduate or graduate level classes if the knowledge or exposure will help to launch next steps in their career.

Qualifications:

Students with either Bachelor or Master degrees are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate would be highly motivated, have an interest in neuroimmunology and an eagerness to learn.
