Introduction of School/Department

The Department of Urology at Yale School of Medicine delivers state-of-the-art, compassionate care to patients - including patients with prostate, bladder, kidney, and testicular cancers - while maintaining an unwavering commitment to research and education.

Dr. Isaac Kim, Professor and Chair of the department of Urology, is a urologic oncologist and surgeon who specializes in the treatment, management, and prevention of prostate cancer, with the goal of helping patients navigate and better understand their disease. He has expertise in minimally invasive robotic surgery and has completed more than 2,400 robotic surgeries for prostate cancer. Dr. Kim’s surgical focus has been on advanced and metastatic prostate cancer, as well as recurrent disease after radiation. Dr. Kim’s clinical research is focused on mechanisms of treatment resistance and specifically immunosuppressive factors produced by prostate cancer cells. He also has a strong interest in inflammation in prostate cancer and the role of surgery in men with advanced or metastatic prostate cancer.

Overview: We are seeking a highly qualified and passionate trainee to embark on state-of-the-art translational genitourinary cancer research projects associated with the generation of cancer models, genomic analysis, and the search for novel therapeutics. This work takes place amid a highly collaborative team of researchers and clinicians at the interface of basic science and cancer medicine, with the common goal of bringing precision cancer medicine closer to patients and families.

Education: This appointment will offer an incredible opportunity to learn about the role of surgery in men who present with metastatic prostate cancer and mechanism of treatment resistance in prostate cancer cells. The appointment is ideal for someone who is interested in gaining experience in clinical/laboratory research prior to medical school.

Training: The candidate will be trained in basic data management and analysis, and advanced laboratory and research techniques in particular, cell culture and animal studies that will aid in broader research and clinical concepts that translate into improved cancer diagnosis, treatment strategies for prostate cancer and other urological diseases.

Mentoring: Mentoring is an important component of this appointment. The candidate is expected to meet directly with the PI at regular intervals for discussions related to their research and other relevant topics (i.e., career trajectories, research/clinical interests

etc.). The trainee will be expected to participate in weekly lab meetings to discuss progress of their projects.

Qualifications: A bachelor’s or master’s degree in relevant fields with the intention of attending medical school following this appointment is required. Candidates cannot be currently matriculated in a degree granting while enrolled in this appointment. Candidates should be highly motivated and have a sincere interest in data management/analysis, and cell culture, prostate cancer and urological diseases.
